What P0128 usually means on a Camry

P0128 means the Camry's engine isn't reaching operating temperature fast enough — the coolant stays below the ECU's expected threshold within its time window. On these cars it's almost always a thermostat stuck partly open, letting coolant circulate before the engine can warm. It often follows the first cold snap and shows up with slow warm-up, weak cabin heat, and sometimes slightly worse fuel economy.

Most likely causes on this model

  1. Thermostat stuck open

    A worn thermostat that won't fully close is by far the most common cause on any Camry.

  2. Wrong or missing thermostat

    A previous repair with no thermostat, or a too-cool aftermarket one, will trip it.

  3. Failing coolant temperature sensor

    A skewed ECT sensor under-reports temperature and mimics a cold engine.
