What P0016 usually means on a Camry
P0016 means the crankshaft and camshaft position signals don't line up on bank 1 — the ECU sees the cam where it doesn't expect it. On chain-driven Camry engines this can be a VVT actuator or oil control valve issue, but it can also signal a stretched timing chain or jumped timing on a neglected, high-mileage engine. It often comes with a hard start, rough running, or a rattle, and shouldn't be ignored, since severe timing errors risk valve-to-piston contact.

- Camshaft timing OCV fault
A stuck oil control valve leaves the cam phaser mis-positioned and throws the correlation off; check it first.
- Sludge-starved VVT actuator
Neglected oil keeps the phaser from settling where commanded.
- Stretched timing chain
High-mileage 2AR-FE and 2GR-FE chains and worn guides can let cam timing drift enough to set P0016.
- Failed cam or crank position sensor
A weak signal from either sensor breaks the correlation the ECU checks.

A stretched chain is a far bigger job — covers, tensioner, guides, and chain — so it's worth confirming with the OCV and sensors ruled out first.
