What P0430 usually means on a Camry

P0430 only appears on V6 Camrys, since the four-cylinders have a single bank. It means the bank 2 (rear) catalytic converter has dropped below the efficiency the ECU expects. Like its bank 1 twin P0420, it's usually a slowly aging original converter or a tired downstream sensor rather than a sudden failure. Because bank 2 hides against the firewall, both diagnosis and repair are more awkward than on the front bank.

1. Worn bank 2 catalytic converter

   High-mileage 2GR-FE Camrys lose rear-bank cat efficiency just like the front; heat cycles and age are enough.

2. Aged bank 2 downstream O2 sensor

   The rear sensor is harder to reach on the firewall side and often original, and a slow one imitates a bad cat.

3. Exhaust leak on the rear bank

   Rusted rear manifold or pipe joints pull in air and skew the reading.

4. Oil or coolant contamination

   A weeping 2GR-FE valve cover or timing cover can foul the rear cat over time.

5. Unresolved rear-bank misfire

   A weak coil on cylinders 2, 4, or 6 dumps fuel into the rear cat and trips P0430.

Bank 2 work on the 2GR-FE is the pricier of the two converters because access is tight against the firewall, which adds labor time.
