P0171 on a Toyota Camry
System Too Lean (Bank 1)
2.4L 2AZ-FE and 2.5L 2AR-FE fours and 3.5L 2GR-FE V6 (bank 1).
What P0171 usually means on a Camry
P0171 means the Camry's fuel trims are running too lean on bank 1 — the ECU is piling on fuel to make up for extra air or missing fuel. On four-cylinders a dirty mass-airflow sensor or a PCV/intake vacuum leak is the usual story. High-mileage Camrys also see it from a weak fuel pump or clogged injectors. The car often idles acceptably but hesitates or surges, sometimes with a lean-induced light misfire.
Most likely causes on this model
- Dirty MAF sensor
Denso hot-wire MAF elements get contaminated and under-report airflow; a proper cleaning often clears it.
- Vacuum leak
Cracked PCV hoses, brittle intake gaskets, or a leaking brake-booster hose lean out the mixture on aging Camrys.
- Weak fuel delivery
A tired pump or dirty injectors can't keep up and push trims positive under load.
- Failing upstream air-fuel sensor
Denso wideband AF sensors slow with age and misreport the mixture.
- Stuck-open purge valve
A leaking EVAP purge solenoid adds unmetered air at idle and drives trims lean.
What it costs on a Camry
The cheapest fixes — cleaning the MAF, replacing a vacuum hose or PCV valve — cost little and resolve most Camry P0171 cases. A new Denso AF sensor or fuel pump is a bigger ticket. Read live fuel-trim data first so you replace the actual cause instead of guessing.

Is P0171 safe to drive with?
Short trips are fine, but a persistent lean condition raises combustion temperatures and can, over time, damage the catalyst or cause misfires. Get it diagnosed before it snowballs.
Will P0171 hurt my Camry's fuel economy?
A little — the ECU compensates by adding fuel, and a lean-driven stumble makes you burn more. Fixing the root cause, usually a dirty MAF or vacuum leak, restores normal mileage.
