What P0011 usually means on a Camry

P0011 on a Camry means the intake camshaft on bank 1 is more advanced than the ECU commanded — the variable valve timing (VVT-i) is out of position. On Toyota's VVT-i engines this most often traces to the camshaft timing oil control valve (OCV) sticking, or its filter screen clogging with sludge, both aggravated by dirty or overdue oil. It can cause a rough idle, hesitation, and occasionally a startup rattle from the VVT actuator.

Most likely causes on this model

1. Stuck camshaft timing OCV (VVT solenoid)

   Sludge or debris jams the oil control valve — the classic Toyota VVT-i cause, and often a cheap clean or bolt-on fix.

2. Clogged OCV filter screen

   The small screen behind the valve traps sludge from missed oil changes and starves the actuator of oil.

3. Dirty or low engine oil

   VVT-i relies on clean oil pressure, so neglected oil is the root cause behind most P0011s.

4. Worn VVT actuator or cam gear

   On high-mileage engines the phaser itself wears and can't hold the commanded timing.

What it costs on a Camry

The oil control valve is a modest part and reasonably accessible on the four-cylinders, so this is an affordable fix when that's the culprit. Fresh oil of the correct weight and a cleaned screen resolve many cases outright. If the VVT actuator itself is worn, the bill climbs because it's part of the cam drive.

Fixing it

Change the oil with the correct viscosity first, then inspect and clean or replace the bank 1 camshaft timing OCV and its filter screen — sludge there is the usual culprit on 2AZ-FE and 2AR-FE Camrys. Only chase the cam actuator once the valve and screen check out.
