P0016
SeriousCrankshaft/Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)
Take P0016 seriously, especially if you hear a rattle at start-up. If the cause is a timing chain that has jumped, continued driving can bend valves and cause expensive engine damage. It may be a cheap oil or solenoid fix, but don't assume — get it diagnosed before driving far.
What this code means
The computer compares the crankshaft and camshaft positions to confirm the engine's timing is correct. P0016 means they're out of their expected relationship on Bank 1 — the cam is timed wrong relative to the crank. The serious cause is a stretched or jumped timing chain (or belt), common on higher-mileage engines. Cheaper causes are a stuck VVT phaser or oil-control solenoid — often from old, dirty, or low oil clogging the passages — or a cam/crank sensor reading incorrectly. Because a genuine timing problem can lead to major engine damage, this one deserves prompt attention.
Symptoms you might notice
- Rattle from the front of the engine, especially at start-up
- Hard starting, long cranking, or a no-start
- Rough running, hesitation, or power loss
- Check-engine light
What it costs to fix
Typical range: $120–$2,500 · about ~0.3–10 hrs of labor
| If the cause is… | Part | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Oil / VVT solenoid (the lucky, less-common fix) | $30–$150 | ~0.3–2 hrs |
| Camshaft or crankshaft sensor | $20–$200 | ~0.5–3 hrs |
| Timing chain / phaser (the serious cause) | $150–$1,200 | ~4–10 hrs |
Be realistic about the low end: a correlation fault is only occasionally cured by oil or a solenoid — that's the lucky case, not the expectation. More often it's a sensor, or at the serious end a stretched/jumped timing chain, a major repair (which can also come with engine damage) that varies far too much to quote. Get it diagnosed before assuming it's cheap.

Frequently asked
Can I drive with P0016?
Cautiously and not far. If it's just oil or a solenoid, it's minor — but if the timing chain has stretched or jumped, driving risks serious engine damage. If you hear a rattle or it runs poorly, stop and get it diagnosed before driving more.
Can low oil cause P0016?
Yes — the variable-timing system runs on oil pressure, so low, dirty, or wrong-grade oil can throw the cam timing off and set this code. Checking oil and possibly changing it is a cheap, smart first step.
Is P0016 a timing chain problem?
It can be — a stretched or jumped chain is the serious cause and is common on high-mileage engines. But a stuck VVT solenoid, old oil, or a sensor can cause it too, so it's worth ruling those out before assuming the worst.
How much does it cost to fix P0016?
From an oil change or a cheap solenoid up to a major timing-chain repair that varies widely (and can include engine damage). Diagnosis is essential before authorizing the expensive route.
