P0016 on a Ford F-150
Crankshaft/Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)
5.4L Triton 3-valve V8 (2004-2010); also 3.5L EcoBoost and Ti-VCT V6s.
What P0016 usually means on a F-150
P0016 flags a crankshaft-to-camshaft correlation problem on bank 1, meaning the PCM sees the cam and crank out of their expected relationship. On the 3-valve Triton this is a hallmark of worn cam phasers and stretched timing chains, and on the EcoBoost it can point to chain or phaser wear as well. It frequently arrives with a cold-start rattle, rough running, and sometimes a no-start. Because it reflects actual mechanical timing being off, P0016 is a code you should not ignore or clear and drive on.
Most likely causes on this model
- Worn cam phaser (5.4L 3V)
A worn phaser lets the cam drift relative to the crank, which is exactly the correlation error P0016 describes. The cold-start rattle is the giveaway on the Triton 3V.
- Stretched timing chain and worn guides/tensioner
As the chain stretches, cam timing slips behind the crank and P0016 sets. Common on high-mileage Tritons and EcoBoosts run on tired oil.
- Stuck VCT solenoid holding the phaser off-target
A sludged solenoid can park the phaser away from where the PCM expects it, producing a correlation code even before the hardware is fully worn out.
- Low oil pressure / poor oil condition
Insufficient clean oil pressure prevents the phaser from being held at its commanded angle, throwing off cam-to-crank timing.
What it costs on a F-150
P0016 on a 5.4L 3V rarely has a cheap ending, because it usually means the timing components are worn. A proper repair covers phasers, chains, guides, tensioners, and solenoids, and the labor to reach them makes this one of the more expensive common Triton jobs, typically well into four figures. It is worth doing correctly once rather than replacing single parts and having the code return.
Fixing it
Do not just clear P0016 and keep driving; a slipping chain can jump time. Have the timing components inspected as a set, and if the phasers or chain are worn, replace the full timing kit while the front of the engine is open.
