P0128 on a Ford F-150
Coolant Thermostat Below Regulating Temperature
Triton V8, 5.0L Coyote, and EcoBoost V6 F-150s.
What P0128 usually means on a F-150
P0128 means the engine is not reaching its expected operating temperature in the time the PCM allows, and on the F-150 that almost always points at a thermostat stuck open or opening too early. A truck that warms up slowly, blows lukewarm heat in cold weather, or shows a low temperature gauge is the classic case. Occasionally a bad coolant temperature sensor fools the PCM into thinking the engine is cold. It is a straightforward code, but worth fixing because a cold-running engine hurts fuel economy and emissions.
Most likely causes on this model
- Thermostat stuck open or opening early
By far the most common P0128 cause on the F-150. A thermostat that will not close keeps coolant circulating and the engine never reaches temperature.
- Faulty engine coolant temperature sensor
A sensor reading low tells the PCM the engine is colder than it is, setting the code even with a good thermostat. Cheap to test and rule out.
- Very cold ambient operation / short trips
In deep cold or on short drives the engine may genuinely struggle to reach temperature, which can trip P0128 without a failed part, though a weak thermostat usually makes it worse.
What it costs on a F-150
A thermostat replacement on the F-150 is a moderate job depending on engine and its location, with the part itself inexpensive and most of the cost in labor and coolant. The EcoBoost's thermostat housing can take a bit more time to reach than a Triton's. Overall this is one of the more affordable codes to resolve on the truck.
Fixing it
Verify actual coolant temperature with a scan tool against the gauge before buying parts. If it plateaus below normal operating temperature, replace the thermostat; if the sensor reads implausibly low, replace that instead.
