What P0340 usually means on a F-150

On the 3-valve Triton F-150, P0340 (camshaft position sensor circuit) is rarely just a dead sensor. These engines use variable cam timing driven by oil pressure, and as the VCT phasers and their solenoids wear, the cam signal the PCM sees gets erratic enough to log P0340 or its bank-2 twin. Owners usually notice a rattle at cold start-up, rough idle, or a hard/no-start before the light ever comes on. Because the sensor reads a target on the same phaser that tends to fail, replacing only the sensor often does not stick.

Most likely causes on this model

  1. Worn VCT cam phaser (5.4L 3V)

    The 3-valve Triton's phasers wear and rattle with age and neglected oil changes, and a sloppy phaser throws off the cam-to-crank relationship the PCM watches, setting P0340. The tell is a 1-2 second cold-start rattle from the front of the engine.

  2. Failing cam position sensor itself

    The Hall-effect sensor does fail on its own, and it is the cheap thing to rule out first. Oil-soaked connectors and heat-baked sensors are common on high-mileage trucks.

  3. Low or dirty oil starving the VCT system

    Variable cam timing runs on clean oil pressure. Sludge from extended intervals clogs the phaser and solenoid oil passages, which mimics a sensor fault. Many P0340 trucks clear up with a solenoid and an oil service.

  4. Chafed or oil-contaminated wiring/connector

    The cam sensor harness runs near the valve cover and wicks oil past a leaking cover gasket, corroding pins and dropping the signal.

  5. Stretched timing chain / worn guides

    At very high mileage the Triton's chains and tensioners wear, retarding cam timing far enough to trip the correlation the sensor helps establish.

The sensor itself is inexpensive and reachable, so a sensor-first attempt is cheap. The problem is that when the real cause is phasers, you are into cam phaser, VCT solenoid, and often chain work on the 5.4L 3V, and that is a heavy, hours-deep job with special tools to hold cam timing. A full phaser job at a shop commonly lands in four figures, which is why an accurate diagnosis before parts matters so much on this engine.

Fixing it

Scan for bank-1 and bank-2 cam codes together and listen for a cold-start rattle before spending money. If the sensor and connector are clean and the truck rattles on start-up, budget for VCT solenoids and phasers rather than chasing the sensor a second time.
