What P0420 usually means on a F-150
P0420 reports that the bank-1 catalytic converter is not cleaning the exhaust as efficiently as the PCM expects. On the F-150 this often shows up on high-mileage trucks with no drivability symptoms at all, just the light. It is important to rule out an upstream cause first, because years of even mild misfires or running rich on a Triton can cook the converter, and a fresh cat behind an unresolved problem will fail again. On EcoBoost trucks, exhaust leaks and lazy downstream sensors are also worth checking before condemning the converter.
Most likely causes on this model
- Aged catalytic converter
At high mileage the bank-1 converter simply wears out, especially on trucks that lived hard or ran with earlier misfires. This is the end diagnosis once upstream causes are cleared.
- Lazy downstream oxygen sensor
A slow rear O2 sensor can report low efficiency on a converter that is still marginally fine. Cheaper to test and replace than a cat, so rule it out first.
- Prior misfires or rich running damaging the cat
Unburned fuel from Triton misfires or a rich condition overheats and clogs the catalyst. Fix the root cause or the new converter will not last.
- Exhaust leak ahead of the rear sensor
A leak at a gasket or flex joint lets oxygen reach the downstream sensor and mimics a failed converter, common on rust-belt F-150s.
What it costs on a F-150
A quality direct-fit converter for an F-150 is a several-hundred-dollar part, and OEM units cost considerably more, with the bank-1 cat on a V8 being straightforward to access on most trucks. The bigger cost trap is buying a cheap converter that trips P0420 again within a year, or replacing a cat when a misfire or a lazy sensor was the real cause. Diagnose upstream first and buy the right converter once.

Confirm there are no misfire or fuel-trim codes, compare upstream and downstream O2 activity, and check for exhaust leaks before buying a converter. If the cat is truly spent, a CARB-compliant or OEM unit is the fix that holds on this truck.
