What P0430 usually means on a F-150
P0430 is the bank-2 counterpart to P0420, flagging low efficiency on the other side's catalytic converter. On the V8 and EcoBoost V6 F-150s the causes and the diagnostic approach are identical to bank 1, just on the opposite bank. Seeing P0430 by itself points at that side's converter, downstream sensor, or an exhaust leak on that bank. As with P0420, it usually appears on higher-mileage trucks with no noticeable driving symptoms.
Most likely causes on this model
- Worn bank-2 catalytic converter
The passenger or driver-side converter (depending on layout) ages out with miles and heat, and P0430 without other codes points right at it once upstream causes are cleared.
- Slow bank-2 downstream O2 sensor
A sluggish rear sensor on bank 2 can falsely report low efficiency. It is the inexpensive item to test and replace before condemning the cat.
- Bank-2 exhaust leak
A leak upstream of the rear sensor on that bank pulls in air and imitates a bad converter, a frequent finding on rusty older F-150s.
- Upstream misfire or rich condition on bank 2
Damage to the converter from unburned fuel means the code is a symptom; resolve the misfire or fueling issue or the replacement cat will degrade too.
What it costs on a F-150
Costs mirror the bank-1 side: a good direct-fit converter runs a few hundred dollars installed, OEM more, with reasonable access on most F-150 layouts. The same warning applies about cheap converters that re-trip the code and about replacing a cat when a sensor or misfire was to blame. Fixing one bank does not always mean the other is fine, so verify both if the truck is high-mileage.
Fixing it
Treat P0430 exactly like P0420 but on the opposite bank: clear upstream causes, compare O2 sensor behavior, and check for leaks before buying the converter.
