What this code means
Engines with variable valve timing adjust the intake camshaft using oil pressure routed through an electrically controlled solenoid (often called a VVT/VCT solenoid or oil-control valve). P0010 is a CIRCUIT code: the computer detected an electrical fault — an open, short, or wrong resistance — when it tried to drive the Bank 1 intake cam actuator solenoid. That points to the solenoid winding itself or its wiring and connector, not to the cam being in the wrong position (those are separate timing codes like P0011/P0012). Low or dirty oil is the classic aggravator: sludge can gum up the solenoid plunger and stress the circuit, so checking oil level and condition is still a smart first step. With the circuit down, the computer usually parks the cam at base timing, so the engine runs but gives up some power and economy.

How to fix P0010
Moderate — doable at home with common tools and patience
- Check the oil level and condition
Pull the dipstick and look at both level and color. Low or sludgy oil gums up the VVT solenoid plunger and stresses the circuit; if the oil is overdue, change it with the correct viscosity before spending anything on parts.
- Inspect the solenoid connector and wiring
Locate the Bank 1 intake cam actuator solenoid near the front of the cylinder head, unplug it, and look for corrosion, bent pins, oil intrusion, or a chafed harness. A poor connection produces exactly the open/short fault this circuit code describes and costs nothing to fix.
- Measure the solenoid winding resistance
With the connector off, put a multimeter across the solenoid terminals and compare against the spec in a service manual (typically a low single-digit to low double-digit ohm reading). An open circuit or near-zero short means the solenoid itself has failed and needs replacement.
- Verify power and ground at the harness side
Check for supply voltage at the connector with the key on. If the solenoid tests fine but the circuit is dead, the fault is in the harness between the solenoid and the computer and needs to be traced rather than masked with a new part.
- Replace the solenoid, clear the code, and retest
Swap in a new oil-control solenoid if it failed the resistance test, clear the code, and drive through a full warm-up cycle. If P0010 returns with a good solenoid and clean wiring, the PCM driver circuit needs professional diagnosis.

This is one of the more DIY-friendly VVT codes: the oil check, connector inspection, resistance test, and solenoid swap are all within reach of a home mechanic with a multimeter, since the solenoid usually sits accessibly at the front of the head.
