What this code means
The fuel volume regulator is a small solenoid valve, usually on the high-pressure fuel pump of diesel and direct-injection gasoline engines, that meters how much fuel the pump pressurizes. The engine computer drives it electrically, and P0001 sets when the computer detects an open circuit — it sends a command but sees no complete electrical path back. This is an electrical code, not a pressure reading, so the usual suspects are a damaged wire, a corroded or unplugged connector at the pump, or a regulator solenoid whose internal coil has failed. Rodent-chewed wiring and connectors loosened during other engine work are classic real-world triggers. Because the computer can no longer control fuel volume precisely, it may fall back to a default strategy, and companion codes like P0087 or P0088 for actual rail-pressure problems often appear alongside it.
