P0128 on a Ford Escape
Coolant Thermostat Below Regulating Temperature
2.5L Duratec four, EcoBoost fours, and 3.0L Duratec V6.
What P0128 usually means on a Escape
P0128 sets when the Escape's engine does not warm up to its expected temperature within the time the PCM allows, and the overwhelming cause is a thermostat that is stuck open or opening too soon. A slow warm-up, weak heat in winter, or a temperature gauge that sits low are the everyday signs. Less often, a coolant temperature sensor reading low makes the PCM think the engine is still cold. It is a minor code mechanically but worth fixing because a cold-running engine wastes fuel and increases emissions.
Most likely causes on this model
- Thermostat stuck open or opening early
The dominant P0128 cause on the Escape. A thermostat that will not close keeps the engine below operating temperature no matter how long it runs.
- Faulty coolant temperature sensor
A sensor reading falsely low tells the PCM the engine is colder than it is and can set the code even with a good thermostat. It is cheap to test.
- Extended cold-weather short trips
In deep cold or on very short drives the engine may not reach temperature, which can trip P0128, though a weak thermostat almost always makes it worse.
What it costs on a Escape
The thermostat itself is an inexpensive part, and on the Escape most of the cost is labor and coolant, with the exact effort depending on engine and housing location. The EcoBoost's integrated housing can take a little more time than the older Duratec setup. Overall this is one of the cheaper codes to put right on the Escape.
Fixing it
Compare scan-tool coolant temperature against the gauge before buying parts. If it stalls below normal operating temperature, replace the thermostat; if the sensor reads implausibly low while the engine is clearly warm, replace the sensor.
