P0455 on a Ford Escape
Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (Large Leak)
All modern gas Escape engines (Duratec fours, EcoBoost fours, 3.0L V6).
What P0455 usually means on a Escape
P0455 indicates a large leak in the evaporative-emissions system, the sealed network that captures fuel vapor. On the Escape the most frequent cause is a loose or worn gas cap, so that is always the first thing to check. Beyond the cap, the canister vent valve, purge valve, and cracked EVAP hoses are the common hardware failures. Because it is a large leak rather than a tiny one, the source is usually findable with a smoke test and does not require exotic equipment.
Most likely causes on this model
- Loose, damaged, or missing fuel cap
The most common P0455 cause on the Escape. A cap not clicked tight or with a hardened seal lets the whole system leak. Re-seat or replace it first.
- Faulty canister vent valve
A vent solenoid stuck open reads as a large leak to the PCM. It sits under the vehicle and is exposed to road grime, a common failure point.
- Cracked or disconnected EVAP hoses
Vapor lines near the tank and canister crack with age, producing a large leak on higher-mileage Escapes.
- Leaking purge valve
A purge solenoid stuck open or with a failed seal lets the system leak and can affect idle. Check it when the cap and vent valve test fine.
What it costs on a Escape
This is generally a low-cost repair: a fuel cap is cheap, and a vent or purge valve is an inexpensive part on the Escape. A smoke test is a small charge that finds a cracked line quickly and beats guessing. The only way it gets pricey is by replacing parts blindly, so smoke-test if the cap does not fix it.
Fixing it
Tighten or replace the gas cap and clear the code first; many P0455s do not return. If it comes back, smoke-test the EVAP system to identify the vent valve, purge valve, or cracked hose responsible.
