What P0340 usually means on a Escape
P0340 is a camshaft position sensor circuit fault, meaning the PCM has lost or is receiving an unreliable signal from the cam sensor. On the Escape this can be a failed sensor, an oil-contaminated or corroded connector, or wiring damage, and on engines with variable cam timing it can reflect a timing or phaser issue. Symptoms include hard starting, stalling, a rough idle, or a no-start in some cases. It is usually a more contained problem on the Escape than on Ford's larger variable-cam V8s, but the diagnostic order still matters.

- Failed camshaft position sensor
The sensor itself is a common and inexpensive failure on the Escape and the first thing to test when P0340 sets.
- Oil-contaminated or corroded connector
A leaking valve cover or cam seal wicks oil into the sensor plug and corrodes the pins, dropping the signal. Clean or repair the connector before assuming the sensor is bad.
- Damaged or chafed wiring
The cam sensor harness can chafe against nearby components, breaking the circuit intermittently and setting P0340.
- Timing/phaser issue on variable-cam engines
On engines with variable cam timing, worn timing components or a stuck phaser can skew the cam signal enough to log the code, though this is less common than a simple sensor fault on the Escape.
