What P0011 usually means on a RAV4

P0011 on a RAV4 means the bank 1 intake camshaft is over-advanced — the VVT-i system has drifted from its commanded angle. On Toyota's VVT-i engines the usual cause is the camshaft timing oil control valve (OCV) sticking, or its filter screen clogging with sludge, both tied to dirty or overdue oil. It can bring a rough idle, hesitation, and sometimes a short startup rattle from the actuator.

Most likely causes on this model

1. Stuck camshaft timing OCV

   A sludge-jammed oil control valve is the classic VVT-i cause and often a cheap fix on the RAV4.

2. Clogged OCV filter screen

   The small screen behind the valve traps sludge from missed oil changes and starves the actuator.

3. Dirty or low oil

   VVT-i needs clean oil pressure, so neglected oil is the underlying cause of most P0011s.

4. Worn VVT actuator

   On high-mileage engines the cam phaser wears and can't hold the commanded timing.

What it costs on a RAV4

The oil control valve is a modest part and reachable on the four-cylinder RAV4, so it's an affordable fix when that's the issue. A correct-grade oil change plus a cleaned screen resolves many cases. A worn cam actuator is the costlier path since it's part of the timing drive.

Fixing it

Change the oil to the correct viscosity, then clean or replace the bank 1 camshaft timing OCV and its screen before anything else — sludge there is the usual RAV4 cause. Reserve the cam actuator for cases where the valve and screen come back clean.
