P0172
SeriousSystem Too Rich (Bank 1)
P0172 is usually drivable short-term, but don't leave it. A rich mixture fouls plugs and can overheat and damage the catalytic converter over time. Have it diagnosed soon — start with the cheap suspects (air filter, MAF, coolant-temp sensor) before assuming an injector.
What this code means
"Too rich" is the opposite of lean: too much fuel or too little air, and the computer has had to pull fuel out to compensate up to its limit on Bank 1. Common causes are too much fuel pressure (a failing regulator), a leaking fuel injector, a dirty air filter or MAF sensor mis-reading airflow, or a coolant-temperature sensor falsely reporting a cold engine so the computer keeps adding fuel. Running rich wastes fuel, fouls spark plugs, and over time can damage the catalytic converter, so it's worth correcting.
Symptoms you might notice
- Rough idle or a strong fuel smell
- Reduced fuel economy
- Black smoke from the exhaust in bad cases
- Fouled spark plugs or a related misfire
- Sometimes a failed emissions test
What it costs to fix
Typical range: $50–$700 · about ~0.3–2.5 hrs of labor
| If the cause is… | Part | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Air filter | $15–$50 | ~0.1–0.3 hrs |
| MAF sensor (clean or replace) | $0–$350 | ~0.3–0.5 hrs |
| Fuel pressure regulator | $50–$200 | ~0.5–2 hrs |
| Fuel injector | $100–$400 | ~1–2.5 hrs |
An air filter or MAF clean is the cheap, common starting point; a regulator or injector is the pricier end. A coolant-temp sensor reading cold is an easy-to-miss cause worth checking before condemning fuel parts.

Frequently asked
Can I drive with P0172?
Short-term usually yes, but running rich wastes fuel, fouls spark plugs, and can damage the catalytic converter over time. Get it diagnosed soon rather than letting it run for weeks.
What's the most common cause of P0172?
Often something cheap upstream — a dirty air filter or MAF sensor, or a coolant-temperature sensor falsely reading cold. Fuel-pressure and injector problems are possible but checked after the easy suspects.
Can P0172 foul my spark plugs?
Yes. Excess fuel coats the plugs with soot, which can cause misfires (and codes like P0300). Fixing the rich condition and replacing fouled plugs usually clears the related misfire too.
How much does it cost to fix P0172?
Frequently inexpensive if it's an air filter, a MAF clean, or a sensor; more if it's a fuel-pressure regulator or a leaking injector. Check the cheap causes first to avoid overspending.
