P0101

Moderate

Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance

P0101 is usually drivable, but the hesitation and poor economy are annoying and it can get worse. It's low-risk to keep driving short-term. Start with the cheapest step — cleaning the MAF and checking the intake for leaks — before buying a new sensor.

What this code means

The mass-airflow (MAF) sensor measures how much air is entering the engine so the computer can match the right amount of fuel. P0101 means the MAF's reading is out of the expected range for current conditions — present, but not believable. The most common cause is simply a dirty MAF sensor (the sensing element gets coated and reads low), which often cleans up with MAF-specific spray cleaner. Other causes are an air-intake leak after the sensor, a clogged air filter, or a genuinely failing MAF. It tends to cause hesitation and poor fuel economy.

Symptoms you might notice

  • Hesitation, stumbling, or surging, especially under acceleration
  • Rough idle
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Hard starting in some cases

What it costs to fix

Typical range: $20–$450 · about ~0.2–1 hrs of labor

If the cause is…PartLabor
MAF sensor (clean)$8$15~0.2–0.5 hrs
MAF sensor (replace)$80$350~0.2–0.5 hrs
Air filter$15$50~0.1–0.3 hrs
Intake duct / clamp repair$10$120~0.3–1 hrs

Try cleaning first — a can of MAF cleaner is a few dollars and frequently fixes it. A replacement MAF is the bigger cost, and genuine OEM sensors on some makes run noticeably higher than aftermarket.

Frequently asked

Can I drive with P0101?

Generally yes, short-term — it's not usually a safety issue. Expect some hesitation and worse fuel economy until it's fixed, and address it before an emissions test.

Will cleaning the MAF sensor fix P0101?

Often, yes. A dirty sensing element is the most common cause, and proper MAF cleaner (not brake cleaner) frequently restores it for a few dollars. If cleaning doesn't hold, check for an intake leak or replace the sensor.

What causes P0101 besides a dirty sensor?

An air-intake leak after the MAF (a cracked duct or loose clamp), a clogged air filter, or a genuinely failed sensor. These are why a quick look at the intake plumbing is worth doing before replacing parts.

How much does it cost to fix P0101?

Possibly almost nothing if cleaning works. A replacement MAF is the main cost; an air filter or duct repair is modest. Clean and inspect before buying a sensor.
