P0100 is usually safe to drive with short-term. The computer falls back to estimated airflow, so expect rough running and worse fuel economy rather than a breakdown. If the engine stalls repeatedly or barely runs, address it sooner. Either way it's a cheap enough diagnosis that there's little reason to live with it.
What this code means
The mass-airflow (MAF) sensor sits in the intake duct and tells the engine computer how much air is entering the engine, which is the foundation for calculating how much fuel to inject. P0100 is the general circuit-malfunction code for that sensor: the signal is missing, erratic, or electrically out of bounds, as opposed to merely implausible (that's P0101). Common causes are an unplugged or corroded connector, damaged wiring between the sensor and computer, a heavily contaminated sensing element, or a failed sensor. Because it's a circuit code, checking the connector and wiring before buying a sensor is time well spent — a half-seated plug after an air-filter change is a classic trigger. When the MAF signal drops out entirely, the computer estimates airflow instead, so the engine usually still runs, just poorly.
