What this code means

P0103 means the mass-airflow sensor's signal is pegged higher than the engine computer considers possible — reporting more airflow than the engine could actually be swallowing at that moment. Since the fuel calculation starts from this number, an exaggerated reading pushes the engine rich: more fuel than the real airflow justifies. The usual causes are electrical — a wire shorted to voltage, a chafed harness, a corroded connector — or a failing sensor whose element has drifted. Contamination can also do it; residue from over-oiled aftermarket air filters coating the sensing element is a well-known real-world culprit. Unlike the generic P0100, this code tells you the direction of the fault (stuck high), which narrows the diagnosis usefully.

What does 'high input' mean on P0103?

The MAF signal is reading above the believable range — claiming more air is entering than physically possible for the conditions. That usually means an electrical short pulling the signal high, a contaminated element, or a sensor that has drifted out of calibration.

Will P0103 hurt my engine if I keep driving?

Not immediately. The engine runs rich, so you'll waste fuel and may notice rough running, and long-term rich operation can shorten catalytic converter life. It's low urgency but cheap to fix, so there's little upside to waiting.

Can a dirty air filter or filter oil cause P0103?

A clogged filter itself doesn't set this code, but oil residue from an over-oiled washable aftermarket filter coating the MAF element is a well-known cause of skewed readings. If you run one, clean the MAF and go lighter on the filter oil.
