What this code means

P0140 sets when the downstream oxygen sensor on Bank 1 — the one after the catalytic converter — produces no signal movement at all: the computer watches for the voltage to respond as exhaust conditions change and instead sees a flat line. Note that downstream sensors are naturally much steadier than upstream ones, so the computer forces a test, typically by driving the mixture rich or cutting fuel on deceleration, and flags the sensor only when it ignores even that. A dead sensor is the leading cause, followed by an open circuit — broken wire, corroded or unplugged connector, which is common on rear sensors whose harnesses run along the underbody — and a failed sensor heater that leaves the element too cold to generate a signal. The engine runs normally throughout; what you lose is catalyst monitoring and emissions compliance.

How to fix P0140

Easy — basic tools, most owners can do this

  1. Check whether the connector is even attached

    A totally flat-lined signal is the classic signature of an open circuit, and rear O2 connectors get yanked loose by road debris or forgotten after exhaust work. Crawl under and physically confirm the connector is seated and the wire is intact along the underbody — this finds a surprising share of P0140s for free.

  2. Check the heater circuit fuse

    The sensor needs its internal heater to reach operating temperature and produce any signal at all. Find the O2 heater fuse in the fuse box and inspect it; a blown fuse is a one-dollar fix worth ruling out before anything else.

  3. Confirm the flat-line on live data

    Warm the engine and watch the Bank 1 Sensor 2 voltage while snapping the throttle and letting off. Even a lazy downstream sensor should twitch during forced rich and decel fuel-cut events; a reading frozen at one value regardless confirms no activity.

  4. Test for heater power and continuity at the connector

    With a multimeter, verify the heater feed has battery voltage with the engine running and check the signal wires for continuity back toward the computer. Power present with an intact circuit leaves the sensor itself as the failure.

  5. Install a new downstream sensor and confirm activity

    Replace the sensor using penetrating oil and an O2 socket, then watch live data to see the voltage come alive as the exhaust warms. Drive several cycles so the catalyst monitor completes — important if an inspection is due, since this code leaves it stuck 'not ready.'

DIY or shop? Very much a home-mechanic code: the two most valuable checks — a disconnected plug and a blown fuse — cost nothing and need no skill, and the sensor swap itself is routine on most cars. A shop earns its fee if the open circuit hides mid-harness and needs proper tracing, or if the old sensor is corroded into the pipe beyond what hand tools will free.
