P0121
SeriousThrottle/Pedal Position Sensor A Range/Performance
Take P0121 a bit more seriously than most sensor codes — inconsistent throttle response and possible reduced-power mode matter in traffic. It's usually drivable gently to a shop. Try cleaning the throttle body before replacing parts; it resolves many of these.
What this code means
P0121 means the throttle position sensor's signal is present but doesn't track properly — it's out of its expected range or doesn't match how far the throttle should be open. A common, cheap cause is a dirty throttle body where carbon makes the plate stick or read inconsistently; a worn TPS or wiring fault can also do it. On drive-by-wire cars the sensor is part of the throttle body. Because throttle control depends on this, it can cause hesitation or reduced-power mode.
Symptoms you might notice
- Hesitation, surging, or inconsistent throttle response
- Rough or hunting idle
- Reduced-power or 'limp' mode
- Stalling in some cases
- Check-engine light
What it costs to fix
Typical range: $30–$500 · about ~0.3–1.5 hrs of labor
| If the cause is… | Part | Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Throttle body cleaning | $8–$20 | ~0.3–1 hrs |
| Throttle position sensor (standalone) | $20–$100 | ~0.3–0.8 hrs |
| Electronic throttle body (integrated TPS) | $150–$500 | ~0.5–1.5 hrs |
Try cleaning first — a carbon-fouled throttle body is a common, cheap cause (do an idle relearn after). A standalone sensor is cheap; a full electronic throttle body is the expensive end.

Frequently asked
Can I drive with P0121?
Cautiously and not for long — it can cause hesitation or reduced-power mode. Driving gently to a shop is usually okay, but don't rely on the car if throttle response is erratic.
Will cleaning the throttle body fix P0121?
Often — carbon making the throttle plate stick or read inconsistently is a common cause. Clean it and do an idle relearn so the computer recalibrates. If it returns, the sensor or throttle body may need replacing.
What's the difference between P0120 and P0121?
P0120 is a general fault in the throttle sensor circuit; P0121 is the signal being present but out of range / not tracking right. P0121 more often points to a dirty throttle body or worn sensor.
How much does it cost to fix P0121?
Often cheap — a throttle-body clean and relearn. A standalone sensor is modest; a full electronic throttle body is the priciest outcome. Clean before buying parts.
