If the engine genuinely runs rich, it is fouling plugs and heating the catalytic converter; if the sensor reads rich falsely, the computer may lean the mixture out in response, which is its own problem. What this code means
P2196 is the rich-side twin of P2195: the upstream oxygen or air-fuel-ratio sensor on bank 1 — the fuel-control sensor ahead of the catalytic converter — is reporting rich continuously instead of switching or tracking normally. As with its lean twin, the sensor is often the messenger rather than the fault: a leaking injector, high fuel pressure, a purge valve stuck open, a MAF over-reading airflow, or a coolant-temperature sensor reading cold can hold the real mixture rich. Freeze-frame data and companions like P0172 point that way; strongly negative long-term fuel trim confirms the computer is fighting genuine extra fuel. If the mixture data looks clean, suspect the sensor itself, which can read falsely rich when contaminated by oil, coolant, or fuel additives, or a wiring fault biasing the signal.
