What this code means
On a drive-by-wire engine, a small electric motor inside the throttle body physically opens and closes the throttle plate. P2101 sets when the computer commands the plate to a position and the feedback shows it didn't move as expected — the motor circuit is working out of range. The classic culprit is heavy carbon buildup that makes the plate stick or bind, forcing the motor to fight it; worn motor brushes, a failing throttle body gear train, or wiring/connector faults in the motor circuit cause it too. Because the computer has lost confident control of the throttle plate, it almost always drops into reduced-power mode, and some cars will barely respond to the pedal until it's fixed. How to fix P2101

Remove the intake duct with the key off and look at the throttle plate and bore. Heavy carbon around the plate's resting position is the classic cause — the actuator motor commands a position and the gunk physically fights it.
- Clean the throttle body thoroughly
Spray throttle-body cleaner and work the carbon off the bore and plate edges with a soft brush and rags. On drive-by-wire units, don't force the plate open by hand against the motor — move it gently or use the scan tool's throttle sweep function, since forcing can strip the gear train you're trying to save.
- Check the motor circuit connector and wiring
Inspect the throttle body connector for corroded or loose pins and the harness for chafe. The actuator motor draws real current, so a marginal connection that a sensor circuit would tolerate can starve the motor enough to set this code.
- Perform a throttle relearn
After cleaning, run the idle/throttle relearn — on many vehicles this requires a scan tool command, on others a specific key-cycle procedure. The computer must relearn the plate's closed position or it will keep seeing a mismatch between command and result.
- Replace the throttle body if it still binds
If the plate moves roughly, the gears feel gritty, or the code returns after a proper cleaning and relearn, the actuator motor or gear train is worn. The throttle body is replaced as a complete unit, followed by another relearn.
DIY or shop? The cleaning is honest DIY work and fixes the carbon-binding cases, which are common. The catch is the relearn: many vehicles will not run right — or exit limp mode — without a scan-tool relearn after the throttle body is cleaned or replaced, so check your model's procedure before starting.
