What this code means
This is the mirror image of P2187: at idle, bank 1 keeps running rich — extra fuel the computer cannot fully trim out — even though the mixture may be fine under way. Idle is when rich problems show best, because fuel flow is lowest and any unwanted extra fuel is proportionally huge. Classic causes are an injector that dribbles fuel instead of sealing shut, a purge valve stuck open so raw fuel vapor from the charcoal canister is drawn in at idle, excessive fuel pressure from a bad regulator, or a MAF sensor over-reporting the small airflow at idle. A leaking fuel-pressure regulator diaphragm on engines that have a vacuum-referenced regulator can also send raw fuel down its vacuum line. A rough, loping idle with a fuel smell is the typical presentation.

What is a purge valve and why would it cause a rich idle?
The purge valve meters stored fuel vapor from the EVAP charcoal canister into the engine to be burned. It should stay closed at idle on most strategies; stuck open, it feeds unmetered fuel vapor exactly when the engine wants the least fuel — a classic and inexpensive cause of P2188.
Why does the problem only appear at idle?
At idle the engine uses so little fuel that even a small uninvited extra — a dribbling injector, vapor from a stuck purge valve — is a large percentage error. At cruise the same extra fuel is a drop in a much bigger bucket, so the trims can absorb it.
Can P2188 foul my spark plugs?
Yes — soot from rich running coats plugs and can bring on misfires, especially noticeable at idle. If the code has been active for a while, having the plugs inspected after the fix is worthwhile; a fouled set can keep the idle rough even once the cause is cured.
