What P0301 usually means on a Silverado 1500

P0301 isolates the misfire to cylinder 1, and on the AFM 5.3L Silverado that detail matters, because cylinder 1 is one of the four cylinders that deactivates under Active Fuel Management. A hard misfire on cylinder 1 with a ticking noise points toward a collapsed AFM lifter on that cylinder rather than a simple ignition part. On non-AFM engines or milder cases, it is more likely that cylinder's coil, plug, or injector. The presence or absence of a lifter tick is the key branch in the diagnosis.

Most likely causes on this model

  1. Collapsed AFM lifter on cylinder 1 (5.3L)

Cylinder 1 is an AFM cylinder, so a hard misfire there with a tick is a prime AFM-lifter suspect. This is internal mechanical failure, not an ignition issue.

  2. Failed coil or worn plug on cylinder 1

The ordinary single-cylinder misfire cause. Swap the coil to another cylinder to see if the misfire follows, and inspect the plug for fouling or wear.

  3. Oil-fouled plug from AFM oil consumption

On oil-consuming 5.3L engines, cylinder 1's plug can foul from burnt oil, misfiring until the consumption is addressed.

  4. Injector or compression issue on cylinder 1

A leaking injector or low compression (including a lifter that has damaged the cam lobe) produces a misfire that ignition parts will not cure; test compression to confirm.

What it costs on a Silverado 1500

If cylinder 1 just needs a coil and plug, it is an inexpensive fix. If it is a collapsed AFM lifter, you are into intake and valvetrain teardown, a four-figure job, and it is worth inspecting the camshaft lobe for that cylinder since a failed lifter can score it. Determining lifter versus ignition before disassembly is what protects your wallet.

Fixing it

Listen for a tick and check compression on cylinder 1 before buying ignition parts. If the coil and plug test fine and the cylinder is an AFM cylinder with a tick, plan for lifter work and inspect the cam lobe.
