OBD codes / P0174 / Chevrolet Silverado 1500
P0174 on a Chevrolet Silverado 1500
System Too Lean (Bank 2)
5.3L, 4.8L, and 6.2L V8s and the 4.3L V6 (bank 2).
What P0174 usually means on a Silverado 1500
P0174 is the bank-2 lean code, the companion to P0171. On the Silverado, when both set together the cause is almost always something that affects the whole engine, like a dirty MAF, a PCV leak, or weak fueling, rather than a single cylinder. When P0174 sets alone, look for a leak specific to bank 2, such as an intake gasket on that side. It is a common pairing on aging GM trucks and usually traces to unmetered air.
Most likely causes on this model
- Shared MAF or PCV/vacuum issue
Because bank-2 lean usually rides with bank-1 lean, a common MAF or PCV leak is the first thing to check when both codes are present.
- Bank-2 intake or gasket leak
A leak isolated to the bank-2 runner or gasket leans only that side, which is why P0174 can appear without P0171.
- Vacuum leak on the bank-2 side
A cracked hose or fitting on bank 2 admits unmetered air and sets the code on that bank alone.
- Insufficient fuel delivery
A weak pump or clogged injectors can leave both banks lean under load, so a bank-2 code can reflect a whole-engine fuel-supply problem.
What it costs on a Silverado 1500
As with P0171, the common repairs are cheap: a MAF cleaning, a PCV hose, or an intake gasket. A smoke test efficiently confirms a bank-2-specific leak before committing to gasket work. Costs rise only if the intake gasket or fuel-supply components are the root cause.
Fixing it
If both P0171 and P0174 are present, chase a shared cause like the MAF or PCV. If only P0174 is set, smoke-test bank 2's intake and gasket area specifically.
