What P0128 usually means on a 1500

P0128 tells you the Ram's coolant did not reach the temperature the PCM expected in the expected time, so the engine is running too cool. On both the HEMI and the Pentastar the fix is almost always a stuck-open thermostat. Occasionally the code follows a coolant service that trapped air, and a failing coolant temperature sensor can imitate it. It does not threaten the truck, but it costs fuel economy and cabin heat, which matters in a work truck used in cold weather.

Most likely causes on this model

1. Stuck-open thermostat

   The dominant cause; the engine warms too slowly and never reaches regulating temperature.

2. Failed coolant temperature sensor

   A sensor reading low convinces the PCM the engine is colder than it really is.

3. Trapped air or low coolant

   A recent service or a slow leak can leave an air pocket that skews warm-up.

4. Wrong-rated aftermarket thermostat

   A replacement opening at the wrong temperature simply re-sets the code.
