P0128 on a Chevrolet Equinox
Coolant Thermostat Below Regulating Temperature
2.4L Ecotec four, later turbo fours, and the 3.6L V6.
What P0128 usually means on a Equinox
P0128 sets when the Equinox's engine does not reach its expected operating temperature within the PCM's allotted time, and the usual cause is a thermostat stuck open or opening too early. A slow warm-up, weak cabin heat in cold weather, or a low-sitting temperature gauge are the everyday signs. Occasionally a coolant temperature sensor reading low fools the PCM into thinking the engine is still cold. It is a minor code mechanically, but a cold-running engine wastes fuel and raises emissions, so it is worth fixing.
Most likely causes on this model
- Thermostat stuck open or opening early
The dominant P0128 cause on the Equinox. A thermostat that will not close keeps the engine below operating temperature no matter how long it runs.
- Faulty coolant temperature sensor
A sensor reading falsely low tells the PCM the engine is colder than it is and can set the code even with a good thermostat. Cheap to test and rule out.
- Extended cold-weather short trips
In deep cold or on very short drives the engine may not reach temperature, which can trip P0128, though a weak thermostat usually makes it worse.
What it costs on a Equinox
The thermostat is an inexpensive part, and on the Equinox most of the cost is labor and coolant, with the exact effort depending on engine and housing location. On the 2.4L Ecotec the thermostat is integrated into a housing that is a common enough service item. Overall this is one of the cheaper codes to resolve on the Equinox.
Fixing it
Compare scan-tool coolant temperature against the gauge before buying parts. If it plateaus below normal operating temperature, replace the thermostat; if the sensor reads implausibly low while the engine is clearly warm, replace the sensor.
