What P0171 usually means on a Equinox

P0171 means the engine, or bank 1 on the V6, is running lean and the PCM is compensating with more fuel. On the Equinox the common causes are a dirty mass airflow sensor, vacuum and PCV leaks, and on the 2.4L Ecotec a PCV system problem that is entangled with the engine's oil consumption. The PCV design on these engines is a frequent lean-code contributor, and a failed PCV diaphragm can both burn oil and lean the mixture. Symptoms range from none to a rough idle, hesitation, or reduced power.

Most likely causes on this model

  1. PCV system fault (2.4L Ecotec)

The 2.4's PCV design is a known trouble spot; a failed diaphragm or stuck valve creates a vacuum leak that leans the mixture and worsens oil consumption at the same time.

  2. Dirty or failing mass airflow sensor

A contaminated MAF under-reports airflow so the PCM under-fuels, a common lean-code cause across Equinox engines.

  3. Vacuum or intake leak

Cracked hoses and intake gasket leaks admit unmetered air and lean out the mixture on aging Equinoxes.

  4. Weak fuel delivery

A tired pump, clogged filter, or dirty injectors can starve the engine enough to log a lean code, especially under load.

What it costs on a Equinox

Many P0171 fixes on the Equinox are inexpensive, like cleaning the MAF or replacing a PCV component. On the 2.4 Ecotec, the PCV fix may be part of the same repair that addresses oil consumption, so it is worth doing thoroughly. A smoke test is a small charge that finds vacuum leaks efficiently and prevents parts-swapping.

Fixing it

On a 2.4, inspect the PCV system first, since it is a common lean-and-oil-consumption source, then clean or replace the MAF and smoke-test for other vacuum leaks. Reserve fuel-supply diagnosis for cases where air-side causes check out.
