What P0442 usually means on a Equinox

P0442 is a small evaporative-emissions leak, the subtler sibling of the large-leak P0455. On the Equinox the leading cause is still the gas cap, since even a slightly worn cap seal lets a small amount of vapor escape. Beyond that, a tiny crack in an EVAP hose, a weeping seal at the tank or canister, or a purge valve that seals imperfectly can trip it. GM purge valves are a common enough failure that they deserve attention here too. Small leaks are hard to find visually, so a smoke test is usually the efficient path.

Most likely causes on this model

  1. Loose or worn fuel cap seal

The most common P0442 cause on the Equinox. A cap that seals imperfectly produces a small leak, so re-seating or replacing it is the first and cheapest step.

  2. Leaking purge valve seal

A GM purge solenoid that seals slightly imperfectly allows a small leak; these valves are a known weak point on the Equinox and worth checking.

  3. Small crack in an EVAP hose

A hairline crack or loose connection in a vapor line produces a small leak that a smoke test can reveal, common as the vehicle ages.

  4. Seal leak at tank or canister

A weeping O-ring or seal at the fuel tank or charcoal canister lets vapor escape slowly, tripping the small-leak monitor.

What it costs on a Equinox

Like P0455, this is usually inexpensive, with the cap the cheapest item and valves or hoses only modestly more. The main cost is diagnostic: a smoke test to find a small leak is worth the small fee because small leaks are hard to spot. Replacing parts without confirming the source is how this becomes wasteful.

Fixing it

Start with the fuel cap and clear the code. If P0442 returns, smoke-test the system, paying particular attention to the purge valve given its track record on these vehicles.
