What this code means
This is the opposite of P0087: the computer sees fuel rail pressure climbing meaningfully above its commanded target. The fuel system builds pressure constantly, so it relies on a regulator — a pressure control valve, fuel volume regulator, or return circuit — to keep pressure in check, and P0088 means that regulation has failed high. Common real-world causes are a pressure regulator or fuel volume control valve stuck closed, a restricted fuel return line that traps pressure in the rail, or a faulty rail pressure sensor exaggerating the reading. On direct-injection and diesel engines, sustained overpressure stresses injectors, seals, and lines, so the computer often derates power to protect the system. Unlike P0087, the engine typically has plenty of fuel available — sometimes too much, causing rich running — but the risk is mechanical stress rather than fuel starvation.
