What this code means

Modern engines — especially direct-injection gasoline and diesel engines — run a fuel rail at very high pressure, and the computer constantly compares measured rail pressure against its target. P0087 sets when measured pressure falls meaningfully below what the computer is commanding, meaning the fuel system cannot keep up with demand. Real-world causes range from cheap to serious: a clogged fuel filter, a weak low-pressure pump in the tank, a failing high-pressure pump, a pressure regulator or fuel volume control valve stuck open, a restricted or kinked fuel line, or simply running the tank very low. A leaking injector or a lying fuel-rail pressure sensor can also be responsible. Because low rail pressure starves the engine of fuel exactly when it needs it most, symptoms tend to show up under acceleration or load, and many vehicles respond by cutting power into limp mode.

How to fix P0087

  1. Check the basics: fuel level and recent refueling

    Running the tank very low starves the in-tank pump and can set this code by itself. Note whether the symptoms began right after a fill-up too — contaminated fuel can restrict filters and screens.

  2. Watch commanded versus actual rail pressure on a scan tool

    Log both values at idle and under hard acceleration. Pressure that tracks at idle but collapses under load is the signature of a supply problem — filter, lift pump, or restricted line — rather than a sensor fault.

  3. Replace the fuel filter if the vehicle has a serviceable one

    A clogged filter is the cheapest realistic cause of low rail pressure, especially on diesels. If the filter that comes out is visibly dirty or the vehicle is overdue for one, this may end the diagnosis.

  4. Test the low-pressure (in-tank) pump's delivery

    Measure the lift pump's output pressure and volume against spec. A weak in-tank pump can't feed the high-pressure pump enough fuel, and it's a much cheaper fix than the high-pressure components people often replace first.

  5. Have the high-pressure side professionally diagnosed

    If supply checks out, the fault is in the high-pressure pump, the pressure regulator or volume control valve, a leaking injector, or the rail pressure sensor. These parts are expensive and their tests are specialized, so get a proper diagnosis before buying any of them.

DIY or shop? A home mechanic can handle the first four steps — fuel level, scan-tool logging, a filter change, and on many vehicles a lift-pump delivery test — and those catch the affordable causes. The high-pressure side is shop territory: rail pressures on direct-injection and diesel systems are dangerously high, the components are costly, and telling a weak pump from a stuck regulator or leaking injector requires specialized test equipment. Don't drive hard in limp mode; the computer is protecting the engine from fuel starvation.
