What this code means

The sensor behind this code is the downstream oxygen sensor on Bank 2: it lives after the catalytic converter on the cylinder bank opposite cylinder 1, which is why the code turns up on V-type and flat engines and not on most inline-4s. Every O2 sensor carries an internal heater so it can reach its several-hundred-degree working temperature seconds after a cold start — for a downstream sensor, that means converter monitoring can begin early in the drive. P0058 sets when the heater control circuit shows higher voltage than the computer expects, which classically traces to wiring shorted to battery voltage or to excess resistance from corroded terminals or a degrading heater element. Underbody connectors that have taken on water and corroded are a recurring real-world source of exactly this fault. The engine's fueling never depends on this sensor, so there are no drivability symptoms — just the light, and a converter monitor that can't finish its homework.
