What this code means

P0056 flags a heater-circuit fault at the downstream oxygen sensor on Bank 2 — that is, the sensor mounted after the catalytic converter on the cylinder bank opposite cylinder 1. Because Bank 2 requires a second cylinder bank, this code effectively belongs to V-type and flat engines; most inline-4s can't set it. The heater inside the sensor exists to shorten the wait between cold start and useful readings — important because the computer wants to begin its converter-efficiency checks early in each drive. A generic 'control circuit' fault here typically means the heater circuit is open or dead when commanded: a burned-out heater element inside the sensor leads the list, followed by a blown fuse and damage to the underbody wiring or connector, which live in the path of road spray and debris. Fueling is untouched — the downstream sensor is a monitor, not a fuel-control input — so the car drives exactly as it did before the light came on.

What does the Bank 2, Sensor 2 oxygen sensor actually do?

It samples exhaust after the Bank 2 catalytic converter so the computer can compare readings against the upstream sensor and judge whether the converter is working. It plays little to no role in setting the fuel mixture — which is why this heater fault doesn't change how the car drives.

Do I need to stop driving because of P0056?

No. There's no mechanical risk, no performance loss, and no strain on other components. The two real consequences are failing an OBD emissions inspection and losing the early-warning value of the check-engine light while it's already lit.

What's the most likely cause of P0056?

A failed heater element inside the sensor — it's the wear item in any oxygen sensor and can't be replaced separately. Wiring or connector damage under the car is the next most likely, and a blown heater fuse is the quick, cheap thing to rule out first.

If I clear P0056, will my car pass inspection before it comes back?

Almost certainly not. Clearing codes resets all the emissions readiness monitors, and a car with incomplete monitors is rejected at OBD testing. The heater monitor will retest the circuit early in driving and set the code again anyway — repair first, then drive normally until monitors complete.
