What this code means
P0044 applies only to vehicles that run two catalytic converters in series on the Bank 1 side (the exhaust from the engine bank containing cylinder 1), because Sensor 3 is the extra oxygen sensor placed after that second converter. Its heater exists for speed: an unheated sensor would take minutes of driving to reach the several-hundred-degree temperature it needs, while the heater gets it there in seconds so emissions monitoring starts early. Setting this code means the computer detected higher-than-normal voltage in the heater control circuit — the typical fingerprints are wiring shorted to battery voltage, or unwanted resistance from corroded terminals or an aging heater element inside the sensor. The sensor is the usual replacement, but the long, exposed underbody harness to this rearmost sensor earns wiring faults a genuine share of the blame. Expect no change from the driver's seat; the engine neither knows nor cares about this sensor when metering fuel.
