What this code means
Every modern oxygen sensor has a small built-in electric heater whose only job is to get the sensor hot enough to work within seconds of a cold start, so the computer can begin fine-tuning the fuel mixture (closed-loop control) right away instead of waiting minutes for exhaust heat to do it. P0030 means the computer found a fault in the heater control circuit for Bank 1, Sensor 1 — the upstream sensor mounted before the catalytic converter, on the side of the engine that contains cylinder 1. A general 'control circuit' code like this usually points to an open circuit or a circuit that simply isn't responding, rather than one clearly shorted in a particular direction. By far the most common cause is the heater element inside the sensor itself burning out with age and heat cycles. A blown heater fuse or a corroded, melted, or chewed wiring connector can set the same code. The sensor still works once the exhaust warms it up naturally — it just takes longer, so early fueling after a cold start runs on estimates.
