What this code means
P0024 is a timing-performance code: the exhaust camshaft on Bank 2 is sitting more advanced than the computer commanded, and the computer cannot bring it back into line. Bank 2 only exists on V-type and flat engines, so this is the bank opposite cylinder 1. Because the phasers run on oil pressure through small passages, the cheapest and most common culprits are oil-related — low level, wrong viscosity, or dirty oil clogging the solenoid screen — followed by a sticking oil-control solenoid or a worn/stuck phaser on that cam. A stretched timing chain is the serious high-mileage cause. Since both banks share the same oil supply, a fault confined to Bank 2's exhaust cam often implicates that specific solenoid or phaser, but verifying the oil is still the right first move.

What's the difference between P0024 and P0023?
P0023 is an electrical fault in the Bank 2 exhaust-cam solenoid's circuit. P0024 means the circuit works but the cam is physically not where it was commanded — over-advanced — which points to oil flow, a sticking solenoid or phaser, or chain stretch rather than wiring.
Can an oil change really fix P0024?
Yes, in a meaningful share of cases — the phaser is hydraulically controlled, and low, dirty, or wrong-grade oil can keep it from following commands. It's not guaranteed, but it's the cheapest first step and good for the engine regardless.
Is P0024 a timing chain problem?
