P0741

Moderate

Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance/Stuck Off

P0741 is usually drivable, but the converter shudder and extra heat aren't good for the transmission long-term, and it occasionally causes stalling at stops. It's lower-urgency than a slipping-gear problem. Try a fluid service and the solenoid before anyone suggests a torque converter, which is a major job.

What this code means

At cruising speed an automatic transmission locks the torque converter clutch (TCC) to create a direct connection — it stops the slight slippage of the converter, which improves fuel economy and lowers heat. P0741 means that lock-up isn't happening properly (the clutch is slipping or stuck off). The cheaper, common causes are a failed TCC solenoid, or low/old/contaminated transmission fluid and a dirty valve body. The expensive cause is wear inside the torque converter itself. Because those outcomes are worlds apart in cost, this one really needs diagnosing before parts.

Symptoms you might notice

  • Shudder or vibration at steady highway speed
  • Engine RPM stays higher than normal at cruise (won't 'lock in')
  • Slightly worse fuel economy and more transmission heat
  • Occasional stalling when coming to a stop
  • Check-engine light

What it costs to fix

Typical range: $100–$2,500 · about ~0.5–8 hrs of labor

If the cause is…PartLabor
Transmission fluid & filter service$80$250~0.5–1.5 hrs
TCC solenoid$30$150~1–4 hrs

Start with a fluid service and the TCC solenoid — the cheaper, common causes (though solenoid labor climbs if it's inside the transmission). A worn torque converter is the expensive end: replacing it means removing the transmission, which varies far too much by vehicle to quote and is why the upper range is left open.

The price swings on which cause it turns out to be — so confirm the cause before paying. Diagnose P0741 for my exact vehicle →

Frequently asked

Can I drive with P0741?

Usually yes, short-term — it mainly costs you fuel economy and lets the transmission run hotter, with some shudder at cruise. If it causes stalling at stops, be careful. Get it looked at before the heat does longer-term harm.

What's the cheapest thing to try for P0741?

A transmission fluid and filter service, plus testing the TCC solenoid. Old or contaminated fluid and a failing solenoid are common, far cheaper causes than the torque converter — worth ruling out first.

Do I need a new torque converter for P0741?

Not always — many P0741s are fixed by fresh fluid or a solenoid. The converter itself is the expensive cause and is confirmed only after the cheaper possibilities are ruled out, because replacing it means dropping the transmission.

How much does it cost to fix P0741?

From a modest fluid service or solenoid up to a major torque-converter job (which requires removing the transmission and varies widely by vehicle). Diagnose the cheap causes before committing to the converter.
