What this code means
The transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor tells the computer how hot the fluid is, and the computer uses that to adjust shift timing, torque-converter lockup, and cold-weather shift strategy. P0711 sets when the reading is implausible — for example the fluid temperature never rises after a long drive, jumps around erratically, or disagrees with engine temperature. This is almost always a sensor or wiring problem, not fluid that's actually at a wrong temperature. The catch is that on many transmissions the TFT sensor is built into the internal wiring harness inside the pan, so a cheap part can carry pan-off labor. Until it's fixed the transmission may shift oddly when cold or delay converter lockup, and the computer loses its ability to protect against real overheating.
