This is the sibling of P0705, and the difference matters for diagnosis: P0705 means the range sensor circuit has an outright electrical fault, while P0706 means the signal is present but doesn't make sense — for example the sensor reports two shifter positions at once, or the reported position disagrees with what the transmission is actually doing. In practice that usually points to a misadjusted sensor, worn internal contacts, or sloppy shift linkage rather than broken wiring. The symptoms overlap with P0705: starting problems, wrong or flickering gear displays, no reverse lights, and harsh or delayed engagement. Because an implausible signal often comes and goes, P0706 is a classic intermittent code — it may set only when the shifter sits right on the edge between two positions.

How to fix P0706

Moderate — doable at home with common tools and patience

  1. Check the shift linkage and cable adjustment

    With the wheels chocked, have a helper move the shifter through the gears while you watch the lever on the transmission — it should hit each detent crisply. A stretched cable or worn linkage bushing lets the sensor sit between positions, which is exactly the implausible reading P0706 describes. Adjustment alone is a common complete fix.

  2. Inspect the range sensor’s connector and harness

    The transmission range sensor (also called the neutral safety switch or PRNDL switch) lives on or in the transmission, low in the splash zone. Look for transmission fluid wicking up into the connector, corrosion, and chafed wires — fluid in the connector is a classic slow killer of the sensor’s contacts.

  3. Watch the gear-position signal on a scan tool

    Slowly move the shifter through every position and watch the reported range on live data. Dropouts, flickering between two gears, or positions that only read correctly with pressure on the lever confirm a worn sensor track or misadjustment — and tell you exactly where it misbehaves.

  4. Adjust or replace the range sensor

    External sensors are bolt-on: mark the old alignment, swap the part, and set the new one with the transmission confirmed in neutral (many use an alignment tool or a small pin). Internal sensors mounted on the valve body require dropping the pan — a bigger, messier job with a fluid refill.

  5. Clear the code and verify every position

    After adjustment or replacement, confirm the dash shows the correct gear in every detent, the engine starts only in Park and Neutral, and the reverse lights work. Those three checks exercise the whole circuit — if all pass and the code stays away, the repair is done.

DIY or shop? The linkage check, connector inspection, and an EXTERNAL sensor replacement are reasonable driveway jobs with basic tools. Hand it to a shop if the sensor is internal (on the valve body), if the fault is intermittent and needs scope-level diagnosis, or if a starter-interlock fault is leaving you stranded.
