OBD-II trouble code

P0734

Serious

Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio

You might be tempted to live with this one since lower gears work — resist it on highways. Slipping in top gear at sustained speed is a fluid-cooking machine, and heat damage spreads beyond the gear that started it. Around town at moderate speeds is lower risk, but get it diagnosed promptly.

What this code means

P0734 means fourth gear failed the ratio check — on many automatics that's the overdrive or cruising gear, so this code lives at highway speed. The computer commanded fourth, compared shaft speeds, and found slip or the wrong ratio, which points at fourth's own clutch pack (often an overdrive clutch) and the solenoid/valve-body circuit that applies it. Typical experience: RPM flares on the 3-4 shift, cruise RPM that won't settle down, or the transmission refusing to take that final upshift at all. As with every ratio code, fluid level and condition are checked first — low pressure makes any clutch slip, and it's the cheapest possibility by far. Sustained highway slip is especially good at overheating fluid, so this one shouldn't be driven on long.

What it costs to fix

Frequently asked

Why is my highway RPM higher than it used to be?

Either the transmission isn't achieving fourth/overdrive, or it's slipping while trying — both raise cruise RPM and burn extra fuel. If the RPM also wanders at steady throttle, that's active slip and a reason to stay off long highway drives until it's fixed.

Could old fluid really cause a top-gear slip?

Yes. Degraded fluid loses its friction properties and pressure integrity, and top-gear clutches are often the first to protest. Check level and condition before any parts — though be aware that on a very worn unit, fresh fluid occasionally reveals wear that old, gummy fluid was masking.

Is fixing just the overdrive clutch worth it?

If the rest of the transmission is healthy and the pan is clean, a targeted repair can make sense. If the fluid shows widespread debris or the unit is high-mileage, an overhaul may be more economical than serially repairing gear after gear. Let the pan inspection guide the call.

Can I just avoid the highway and keep driving?

Briefly, as a way to reach diagnosis — not as a lifestyle. Even around town the transmission may attempt fourth and slip. The code marks active friction damage; the sooner it's diagnosed, the more likely you land on the cheap end of the fix spectrum.
