The transmission computer always knows what gear it commanded, and by dividing input-shaft speed by output-shaft speed it can verify the gear it actually got. P0730 sets when those don't match across gears — the transmission is slipping or landing in the wrong ratio. Unlike the per-gear versions (P0731–P0734), this general code doesn't single out one gear, which often means the problem is systemic: low or burnt fluid, a clogged filter, a worn pump, or a sticking valve body, rather than one clutch pack. That's actually useful news, because the cheapest and most common contributor — fluid level and condition — is exactly where diagnosis should start.
