What this code means
The output speed sensor measures the transmission's output shaft — effectively road speed as the transmission sees it. P0721 means that signal is erratic or implausible rather than absent (that would be P0722): it drops out, spikes, or disagrees with the input speed and wheel speeds. The input-versus-output distinction matters for diagnosis: input sensor codes point to the front of the transmission, output codes to the tail end, and the two signals together are how the computer verifies gear ratios. A flaky output signal causes erratic shifting, a jumpy or dead speedometer on many vehicles, cruise control dropouts, and sometimes limp mode. Common culprits are a weak sensor, metal debris from worn fluid on the sensor tip, and connector or wiring trouble.

Why is my speedometer acting up?
On many vehicles the output speed sensor feeds the speedometer, so an erratic signal makes the needle jump or drop out. If the speedometer misbehaves at the same moments the transmission acts up, that's a strong clue they share this one sensor.
How is P0721 different from an input speed sensor code?
The input sensor (P0715–P0717 family) reads the shaft entering the transmission; the output sensor reads the shaft leaving it. The computer divides one by the other to verify gear ratios. Which sensor flagged tells the technician which end of the transmission — and which circuit — to test.
Could this just be dirty fluid?
It can contribute. Magnetic speed sensors collect metal particles from worn fluid, which garbles the signal. Cleaning the sensor and servicing old fluid is a cheap first step — just have the sensor circuit verified afterward so an actual failing sensor isn't missed.
Can I drive with P0721?
