What this code means

P0562 means the car's electrical system voltage is running too low — the charging system isn't keeping up. The usual cause is a failing alternator, but a weak or dying battery, a loose or worn drive belt, or corroded battery cables and ground connections can all cause it. Low system voltage can make the engine run poorly and, if it's the charging system, can leave you stranded when the battery finally drains. It's worth testing the charging system promptly.

How to fix P0562

Moderate — doable at home with common tools and patience

  1. Clean and tighten terminals and grounds

    Start at the battery terminals, the ground strap to the body/engine, and the main charging cable. Corrosion or a loose ground drops voltage everywhere downstream and is the cheap, embarrassing cause worth eliminating before any testing.

  2. Test the battery

    With the engine off and the battery rested, healthy is roughly 12.6 volts; then load-test it (many parts stores do this free). A battery that fails under load can drag system voltage low even with a good alternator, and it dies first when the alternator is weak — test it before blaming anything else.

  3. Measure charging voltage

    Start the engine and read voltage at the battery: most systems charge in the high-13s to mid-14s. Now switch on headlights, blower, and rear defrost — if voltage sags well below 13 volts under load, the alternator isn't keeping up.

  4. Inspect the drive belt and tensioner

    A glazed, cracked, or loose belt slips under load and mimics a bad alternator, especially in rain. Check belt condition and that the tensioner holds firm — a belt is a fraction of an alternator's cost.

  5. Replace the alternator or battery as testing shows

    Only after grounds, battery, belt, and charging output have each been checked do you know which part failed. Replace what the tests condemn, then confirm charging voltage is back in range and the code stays gone.
