What P0128 usually means on a Grand Cherokee
P0128 means the coolant never reached the temperature the PCM expected in the time it expected, so the engine is effectively running too cool. On the Pentastar-powered Grand Cherokee this is one of the more common codes, and the answer is almost always a stuck-open thermostat. A minority of cases follow a coolant repair that left air in the system, and a failing coolant temperature sensor can mimic it. It rarely hurts drivability but costs you fuel economy and cabin heat in winter.
Most likely causes on this model
- Stuck-open thermostat
By far the most common cause; the engine warms too slowly and never reaches the regulating temperature.
- Failed coolant temperature sensor
A sensor reading low makes the PCM think the engine is cold when it is not.
- Low coolant or trapped air
A recent coolant service or a slow leak can leave an air pocket that skews warm-up.
- Wrong-rated aftermarket thermostat
A replacement that opens at the wrong temperature will re-set the same code.
What it costs on a Grand Cherokee
The integrated thermostat housing on the 3.6 is a moderate job because the thermostat and housing come as an assembly, typically a few hundred dollars parts and labor. The sensor itself is cheap if that turns out to be the cause. This is not an urgent repair, but it is worth doing before winter for the heater and mileage.
Fixing it
Use an OEM-spec thermostat assembly; some aftermarket units open at the wrong temperature and simply bring P0128 back after the repair.
