What P0128 usually means on a Elantra

P0128 tells you the Elantra's coolant did not reach the temperature the PCM expected within the expected time, so the engine is running too cool. On these engines the fix is almost always a stuck-open thermostat. Occasionally it follows a coolant service that trapped air, and a failing coolant temperature sensor can imitate it. It will not strand you, but it hurts fuel economy and cabin heat until corrected.

Most likely causes on this model

1. Stuck-open thermostat

   The dominant cause; the engine warms too slowly and never reaches regulating temperature.

2. Failed coolant temperature sensor

   A sensor reading low convinces the PCM the engine is colder than it is.

3. Trapped air or low coolant

   A recent service or slow leak can leave an air pocket that skews warm-up.

4. Wrong-rated aftermarket thermostat

   A replacement opening at the wrong temperature simply re-sets the code.

What it costs on a Elantra

The thermostat is inexpensive and the job is generally moderate, in the low hundreds including labor. The temperature sensor is cheap if that turns out to be the cause. It is not urgent, but worth doing before winter for heater output and fuel economy.

Fixing it

Fit a correct-temperature OEM-spec thermostat; some aftermarket units open at the wrong temperature and simply bring P0128 back.
