P0014 on a Hyundai Elantra
Camshaft Position Timing Over-Advanced (Bank 1, Exhaust)
Nu 1.8L and 2.0L fours with dual CVVT
What P0014 usually means on a Elantra
P0014 is the exhaust-camshaft version of the CVVT timing fault on the Elantra: the bank 1 exhaust cam is over-advanced or not responding to commands. The Nu engine uses dual CVVT, so the exhaust cam has its own oil control valve and actuator, and the same oil-related causes that set P0011 apply here. A dirty or stuck exhaust-side OCV, low or dirty oil, or timing-chain wear are the usual culprits. It commonly appears with rough running and can set alongside P0011 or related codes.
Most likely causes on this model
- Stuck or dirty exhaust-side oil control valve
The exhaust cam's OCV clogs or sticks and cannot regulate oil to that actuator.
- Low or dirty engine oil
Insufficient or contaminated oil starves the CVVT system of the clean pressure it needs.
- Timing-chain wear
A stretched chain or worn guides skews exhaust-cam timing at higher mileage.
- Faulty exhaust camshaft actuator
A worn phaser on the exhaust cam cannot hold its commanded angle.
What it costs on a Elantra
As with P0011, the inexpensive path is an oil change and the relevant oil control valve, typically low hundreds. A timing-chain repair is the costly outcome in the four figures. Because the exhaust and intake OCVs are separate, make sure the correct one is tested and replaced rather than guessing.
