STOP. Do not keep driving with this code active. Pull over safely, shut the engine off, and check the oil level right away — low level is the most common and cheapest cause, and topping up may restore pressure. If the level is fine but the warning persists, or you hear any ticking or knocking, have the car towed. An engine run without oil pressure can be destroyed in minutes; no trip is worth that gamble.
What this code means
P0524 is fundamentally different from the sender-circuit codes (P0520–P0523): here the computer believes the engine's ACTUAL oil pressure is below the minimum it requires. Oil pressure is what keeps a moving film of oil between the crankshaft, bearings, camshafts, and every other metal-on-metal surface — lose it, and bearings can be wiped out in minutes of running, turning a maintenance issue into an engine replacement. Real causes range from the simple (oil level low from leaks or consumption, badly overdue oil, a clogged filter) to the serious (a worn or failing oil pump, a stuck pressure relief valve, sludge blocking the pickup screen, or worn engine bearings that bleed off pressure). On engines with variable-displacement oil pumps or oil-pressure-dependent systems like variable valve timing, a control fault can also be involved. A faulty sender can technically set this code too, but you must assume the pressure loss is real until a mechanical gauge proves otherwise — this is not a code to clear and drive on.

Could P0524 just be a bad sensor?
It's possible, but P0524 is the code that says pressure itself is too low — not merely that the circuit is acting up — so you must treat it as real. Check the oil level immediately, and don't run the engine until a mechanical gauge confirms whether pressure is actually normal. Guessing 'it's just the sensor' with this code is how engines die.
Can I drive to the shop with P0524?
No — this is one of the few codes where the answer is a flat no until pressure is verified. If real pressure is low, every minute of running grinds bearings against crankshaft journals without protection. Check the oil, top up if low, and if the warning doesn't clear, tow it.
What causes real low oil pressure?
In rough order of likelihood: low oil level, badly overdue or wrong-viscosity oil, a clogged filter or sludged pickup screen, a worn oil pump or stuck relief valve, and — worst case — worn engine bearings. The first few are cheap; the last ones are why you stop driving immediately.
